Casting Studio, London
Where two streets meet in West London, Fieldwork stripped a redundant two-storey building back and reworked it as a three-storey mixed-use scheme, increasing the floorspace by around 60%. A casting studio sits at ground level, with a two-storey apartment above opening onto a roof terrace.
A new mansard sits back behind the parapet, leaving the original building to hold its place on the corner, and a two-storey side extension closes a long-standing gap in the terrace. Zinc shingle tiles wrap both new roofs, setting the additions apart from the original.
Inside, fitted joinery defines the flow between spaces, shifting from a darker stain in the casting studio to a lighter oak on the upper floors. A bespoke timber staircase links each floor, drawing natural ventilation through the section and carrying daylight down from a large circular rooflight. Insulation, solar panels and an air source heat pump reduce the building's carbon footprint. Fieldwork provided both the architecture and the interior design.
